Watch therefore and pray always.

The last references are for chapters because there are several references in each chapter. The intent is to show Jesus telling His followers to examine ourselves and follow His teaching.

… Repent, and believe the gospel.

This is a call; to come and believe but it is also a command to repent.

Follow me, Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead; but go preach the kingdom of God.

Rejoice in that day and be exceeding glad, and leap for joy, for your reward is great in heaven

Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works,and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar and, remember that your brother has something against you; leave your gift before the altar, go your way. Be reconciled to your brother, then come and offer your gift.

When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, agree quickly, while you are in the way with him. Give diligence that you may be delivered from him, lest at any time he deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer cast you into prison. Verily I say unto you, You shall by no means come out till you have paid the very last mite.

He who looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her; in his heart. If your right eye causes you to offend, pluck it out and cast it from you; And if your right hand causes you to offend cut it off.

Drastic measures but they teach the importance Jesus placed on abstaining from adultery. The subject being what it is: the same criteria would surely apply to other body parts.

Swear not at all; neither by heaven, earth, Jerusalem or your own head but let your communication be Yes, and No; …

… resist not evil. But if someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn, offer to him the other also. And if any man will sue you at the law and take away your coat, forbid him not. Let him have your cloak also. And if someone shall compel you to go a mile, go with Him two miles.

Give to every man that asks, and from him that would borrow of you turn not away; and of him that takes your goods ask them not again. And as you would that men should do to you, do to them likewise.

Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that you may be the children of your Father which is in heaven…..

Be perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Love your enemies, do good and lend. Be perfect and merciful, … as your Father is perfect and merciful.

Take heed that you do not your alms before men, to be seen of them. … Do not sound a trumpet, … do not let your left hand know what your righthand does

You shall not be as the hypocrites, … When you pray, enter, into your closet and when you have closed the door, pray to your Father in secret; and your Father which sees in secret shall reward you openly. When you pray, use not vain repetitions as the heathen do, for they think they shall be heard for their much speaking. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what things you need before you ask him.

Pray after this manner: Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen.

When you fast, be not as the hypocrites of a sad countenance, but anoint your head and wash your face. … Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth where moth and rust corrupts, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, …

Take no thought for your life, what you eat or what you drink, nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. … Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat or what shall we drink; or wherewithal shall we be clothed? … seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, … Take no thought for tomorrow; for tomorrow shall take thought for the things of itself.

Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not and you shall not be condemned.

Forgive and you shall be forgiven. Give and it shall be given to you.

You hypocrite, first cast the beam out of your eye, then you shall see clearly.

Give not that which is holy unto dogs, neither cast your pearls before swine. … Ask, … Seek, … Knock. … all things whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do also to them; for this is the law and the prophets.

Enter in at the strait gate. … Beware of false prophets.

What God has joined together, let not man put asunder.

When you pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed by thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

...when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates and powers, take no thought how or what thing you shall answer. Take heed and beware of covetousness; … Fear not little flock. … Sell that you have and give alms. Strive to enter in at the strait gate, ...

Take heed to yourselves, if your brother trespass against you, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. And if he trespass against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again saying, I repent; you shall forgive him. … So likewise, when you shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants. We have done that which was our duty to do.

But it shall not be so among you. But he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; But whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister. And whoso-ever of you will be chief, let him be servant of all.

Have faith in God. … What things you desire when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them. And when you stand praying, forgive, if you have aught against any, …

The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, namely this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

… But do not after their works,… Beware of scribes which love to walk in long robes. … But be not called Rabbi … Neither be called masters.

Spiritual leaders must walk that fine line

Take heed that no man deceive you. … Go not therefore after them … See that you be not terrified. Be not troubled. … Take heed to yourselves. … Take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak. Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer But whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak. … Then let them that be in Judea flee into the mountains, and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter there into. And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein to take anything out of his house. Neither let him that is the field return back again to take his clothes. … But pray that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day. … believe him not. But take heed. … Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth. Behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. …

These directions were important in 70 A.D. , but they apply to us today. We are to be ready to enter eternity at any time.

… then look and lift up your heads for your redemption draws nigh. … know that the kingdom of God is near at hand, even at the doors…

If any man serve me, let him follow me.

A new commandment I give unto you, That you love one another; as I have loved you that you also love one another.

Did Jesus imply that this is possible?

You believe in God, believe also in me. … Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me, or else believe me for the very works' sake. … If you love me, keep my commandments.

… Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

We should remember; perfect love eliminates fear.

Abide in me, and I in you.

Continue in my love. … This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. … These things I command you that you love one another. … Remember, the word I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord.

Ask and you shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Go unto all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Go therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.

Some of the commands used in this study were directed to cover specific situations but we believe they apply to followers of Jesus today, when we are in the same situation Jesus was addressing.

Please use the study with the idea that our Savior's words are precious. And they are the words of life.
