The last references are for chapters because there are several references in each chapter. The intent is to show Jesus telling His followers to examine ourselves and follow His teaching.

… Repent, and believe the gospel.

This is a call; to come and believe but it is also a command to repent.

Follow me, Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead; but go preach the kingdom of God.

Rejoice in that day and be exceeding glad, and leap for joy, for your reward is great in heaven

Matt.5:28-30

He who looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her; in his heart. If your right eye causes you to offend, pluck it out and cast it from you; And if your right hand causes you to offend cut it off.

Drastic measures but they teach the importance Jesus placed on abstaining from adultery. The subject being what it is: the same criteria would surely apply to other body parts.

… resist not evil. But if someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn, offer to him the other also. And if any man will sue you at the law and take away your coat, forbid him not. Let him have your cloak also. And if someone shall compel you to go a mile, go with Him two miles.

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what things you need before you ask him.

Pray after this manner: Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen.

When you fast, be not as the hypocrites of a sad countenance, but anoint your head and wash your face. … Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth where moth and rust corrupts, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, …

Spiritual leaders must walk that fine line

Take heed that no man deceive you. … Go not therefore after them … See that you be not terrified. Be not troubled. … Take heed to yourselves. … Take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak. Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer But whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak. … Then let them that be in Judea flee into the mountains, and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter there into. And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein to take anything out of his house. Neither let him that is the field return back again to take his clothes. … But pray that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day. … believe him not. But take heed. … Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth. Behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. …

These directions were important in 70 A.D. , but they apply to us today. We are to be ready to enter eternity at any time.

… then look and lift up your heads for your redemption draws nigh. … know that the kingdom of God is near at hand, even at the doors…

John 12:26

If any man serve me, let him follow me.

John 13:34

A new commandment I give unto you, That you love one another; as I have loved you that you also love one another.

Did Jesus imply that this is possible?

John 14:1,11,15

You believe in God, believe also in me. … Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me, or else believe me for the very works' sake. … If you love me, keep my commandments.

John 14:27

… Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

We should remember; perfect love eliminates fear.

John 15:4

Abide in me, and I in you.

John 15:9,12,17

Continue in my love. … This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. … These things I command you that you love one another. … Remember, the word I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord.

John 16:24

Ask and you shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Mark 16:15

Go unto all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Matt. 28:19,20

Go therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.

Some of the commands used in this study were directed to cover specific situations but we believe they apply to followers of Jesus today, when we are in the same situation Jesus was addressing.

Please use the study with the idea that our Savior's words are precious. And they are the words of life.
