Jesus and the Ten Commandments

HONOR THY FATHER AND THY MOTHER: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

How is it that you sought me? Do you not know that I must be about my Father's business?

Jesus was witnessing of His Heavenly Father: The remainder of this passage tells of His subjection to His earthly parents.

Woman, what have I to do with you? The time for my ministry is not here yet. Fill the water pots with water. Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast.

Jesus honored His mother's request.

He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me

Jesus identifies a top priority: Parents come second to our love for Him. However that fact does not take away from the need to honor our parents.

Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven, but he who does and teaches them, shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

You hypocrites, Isaiah has well prophesied of you as it is written This people draws nigh unto me with their mouth and honors me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. They worship me in vain, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men, … Full well you reject the commandment of God that you may keep your own tradition. For God commanded saying, Honor your father and mother, … By this action you have made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition which you have developed, and you do many such things.

Honor your father and your mother.

Suppose you that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, No, but rather division. The father shall be divided against the son and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; and the mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

Loving our Heavenly Father and our Brother will cause division, because many do not choose to join in serving as Jesus taught. We must honor our parents even when they do not honor our Savior. Every commandment spoken by Jesus or the Heavenly Father is important. Honoring your parents is part of putting Jesus first.
